This morning Chinese premier Wen Jiabao has arrived in Islamabad to mark his visit to Pakistan by a Chinese premier in 5 years. Mr. Wen is accompanied by some 260-member delegation of government, military personnel and private investors. The two parties are signing several agreements and deals of some 24 billion US Dollars under Chinese economic aid to poverty and flood-stricken Pakistan.
For Pakistan’s survival, China is important the same way as America is to Israel. For example, had not Israel been supplied and backed by America, the Arabs would have annihilated her decades ago; and same is the situation of India facing tremendously “Chinese-built” Pakistan. China has always been playing a stakeholder’s role for Pakistan since the 1950s. There is hardly any field in which China has not supported Pakistan for good; moral, military, engineering, communications and construction; almost for everything China has always cooperated with Pakistan to the utmost. China being neighbor and a non-Muslim state is the greatest helper of Pakistan.
Also on the other hand, for decades and to a great extent, Pakistan has been depending upon her friends in the West specifically America. Most of this dependency has been for financial and military support either purchased or borrowed by Pakistan or given to her as a gesture or incentive in return to geostrategic support to the US.
There is a great environment of debates about visit of the Chinese delegation and its benefits to Pakistan these days among different political, economic and social lobbies. Different forums hail this visit as a new boost or solution for Pakistan desperately seeking support for her drowning economy and other needs specifically the power-generation. There have been so many setbacks Pakistan has been prone to in the past recent years; top of them is power crisis and alarmingly growing militancy by anti-state Islamist elements. At this hour of need, China is seen by many as a “protecting angel”; while many lobbies have their concerns and doubts about the Pakistani government’s strategy and handling of the Chinese delegation. The Chinese are in Pakistan after they have stayed in New Delhi for three days where despite longstanding territorial disputes and weaker diplomatic connections the Chinese and the Indians have signed agreements for maximizing their trade support from current 60 to a 100 billion US Dollars per year by 2015. The Chinese are given a very warm welcome in New Delhi; naturally a very rare thing to happen and both parties happily concluded all matters of mutual interests. Definitely, many people in Pakistani side do not see it normally as growing ties between India and China can possibly affect old Sino-Pakistani friendship.
In my personal view and surely of many others; that’s the problem of the Chinese; and let it be theirs!!! World knows that India is one of the biggest markets on earth. Chinese do what they are supposed to do. It doesn’t matter at all for Pakistan if the Chinese work out their devised strategy for the economic or scientific relations with India; what matters is how well the Chinese prioritize Pakistan. They sure do and they are here to show it to the world. It now totally depends upon Pakistanis to how to make the utmost use of their strongest friendship of all. Chinese have given everything to Pakistan from plastic toys to fighter jets and nuclear plants and they are again at service in the hour of need. Dealing with the Chinese, the current Pakistani government which was elected in early 2008 has regretfully no regard or credibility whatsoever at all. Rated blacklisted and is condemned by many international lobbies and more by Pakistani people. There are so many examples of the incompetence, malfunction or even corruption of the Pakistan’s current Zardari-led government. Apparently, with president Zardari who is since long known as notorious “Mr. Ten Percent” as its head Pakistan’s sitting government is the most disliked, criticized and cursed of all time. Many people who doubt Pakistani government’s integrity suggest that the Chinese must not provide them any funds but instead the Chinese should agree to provide all support to Pakistan in form of machinery, personnel and direct Chinese entrepreneurs or through private-sector franchises.
Ups or downs, goods or bads; one thing which is evident must be realized by Pakistanis. People’s Republic of China is the strongest country in the region; by 2050 China is expected to supersede even the United States and to become the new super power on the globe. The Chinese are a great nation, educated, industrious, peaceful and above all loyal allies. China is an industrial giant and feeds all the world of her products. Even to a great extent the US and entire Europe depends upon China for their economic and trade needs. All the world’s brands are manufactured or assembled in China even hundreds of products imported from West into Pakistan like computers, communication equipment, industrial machinery and spares and even world renowned Adidas and BMW are tagged “Made in China”. China is a geostrategic ally of Pakistan who has never demanded anything in return for her kindness; while for decades the United States has been baiting and bullying Pakistan for everything good or bad in return of the badly needed financial loans or military hardware granted.
This is the moment when the miserable Pakistanis and their ridiculous government must realize that who is who? The reception of the Chinese or the ingratitude of the US…do they prefer Chinese support to build highways, runways, dams and bridges or do they like American threats of the invasion?
